Why this life?

So, what made us decide to live like this? Why throw away the luxurious lifestyle we had become accustomed to and go back to living off the land, and working hard to create everything we needed ourselves if possible? Had we gone mad?!

Well, after a few run-ins with cancer over the years, and having become very overweight by basically not caring for myself as I should have, I decided to totally change my lifestyle and prevent this happening again. About the same time, my husband also had some health challenges and was getting very stressed at work. Eventually he was made redundant and we could not get him another job, which initially was a bit of a hiccup, but it has ended up being a blessing in disguise!

On researching how to get rid of cancer and how to prevent it happening in the first place, a few things kept on coming up, again and again. Living organically, consuming wholefoods and super-foods, exercise, lack of stress, fermented foods, having a predominantly alkaline diet and eating raw foods.

I have implemented all these things into my life, and I have never been healthier. I got the all-clear from my last cancer scare nearly a year ago now, yeah!!! I truly do not believe I could have beaten this as I did, without changing how I lived. I did also ask for and receive many healing prayers, and this helped too, I am sure.

I have now lost a whopping 28kgs and am currently down to around the recommended weight for my height and body structure, for the first time in 10 years! I grow and make virtually everything we eat and a lot that we don’t – I sew, knit, crochet, do paper-making, flax weaving, and much more ! My husband makes most things we need from scrap, recycling, bits given to us from other people, or things we find in nature. We also spend a lot of time outside and in nature, which helps us be healthier and happier :).

We also became concerned about the footprint of our lives on our planet. We realized we could not carry on living as a race the way we were, and survive. We wanted to do something to help not contribute to this ourselves. Ultimately, we aim to live in such a way that respects the earth and everything in it… to be good stewards of all that we have been given to care for, and also to honour all life.

It has been both harder work and far more rewarding than we ever thought it would be to do this, but we are enjoying life so much more than we ever did!

I hope that this may inspire you to also change the way you live, even if it is little changes over time. We can all do something to help ourselves, help others and help our earth to survive.

Peace & love, Suz
